Webinar #6: Installation of steel sheet piles – focus on urban environment
Steel sheet piles can be driven into the ground with impact hammers, vibratory hammers and presses. In urban areas, noise and vibrations are a key issue, mainly in the vicinity of old building, in densely populated boroughs or sensitive areas (hospitals,…). Driving methods and driving equipment have undergone kind of a revolution in the past decades in order to reduce the disturbances. Additionally, adapting the driving procedure continuously through monitoring the vibrations around the job-site is nowadays a quite simple option. This session will focus on installation methods adapted to the urban environment and how to mitigate or prevent the disturbances due to the driving procedures.
Webinar #7: Underground car parks (UCP) and basements
In some jammed cities, the trend is to stop the cars from entering the cities, and to promote public transportation. Nevertheless, cars will continue to need to find a parking spot in urban areas, and underground car parks seems to be a perfect option to increase the offer in city districts where land is quite expensive. Steel sheet piles are often used as temporary retaining walls around the pit, but why not use advanced solutions where they are also the permanent walls of the final structure. Typical issues such as watertightness, aesthetics, … are more a subjective perception than a technical issue. The session will focus on the advantages / disadvantages of a permanent sheet pile wall, and highlight a few projects realised in The Netherlands and other countries, as well as key findings of a market study that was performed in the Netherlands in 2019.
