Dolphins in inland waterways
Dolphins are somewhat flexible structures, mainly to protect other structures from an accidental impact of a vessel.
However, dolphins may also be executed to extend the length of a quay wall, and in some cases they even constitute the berthing and mooring structure of vessels in rivers and canals, or as a guiding structure in front and behind a river lock.
Isolated dolphins are usually built with fabricated box-piles or with HZ-M box-piles, which allow also the fixation of accessories such as bollards at different levels. Steel tubes are used in rare occasions.
For specific applications, like impact of large vessels, dolphins can be built as single circular cells built with AS 500 straight web steel sheet piles. Single circular cells can also be utilized as permanent mooring structures in rivers submitted to very high water fluctuations (tidal or non-tidal).
